Foot Care Tips for Winter Weather

Winter weather decorates the ground with beautiful landscapes and can provide a host of enjoyable outdoor activities. During cold and damp weather conditions it is important to protect your feet by keeping them warm and dry. Foot protection is critical for the elderly and people with circulation problems and especially diabetics. During cold weather the body moves the blood away from the feet and toes, which causes numbness with prolonged exposure to frigid weather.

Follow these important tips for safe outdoor fun:
  • Change socks daily
  • Wear thicker non-constricting socks
  • Wear thicker non-constricting socks
  • Clean and dry your feet thoroughly to avoid fungal infections

Feet exposed to cold and dampness:
  • Should NOT be soaked in HOT water
  • Should NOT be placed near an open flame (such as a fireplace)
  • Should NOT be warmed with a heating pad
  • Should be soaked in warm water at a constant temperature
(Be careful not to allow the water to get hot)
  • Dry your feet thoroughly and repeat the process, if necessary

Have healthy feet and a Happy New Year.
